U.S. researchers found that a rare inherited germline mutation increases the risk of lung cancer 62-fold in nonsmokers.
The mutation is the T790M variant of the EGFR protein, which regulates cell growth, and was found in 1 in 15,850 people among genotype data from 3.37 million individuals.
The researchers said carriers of the variant could benefit from early screening and detection.
