A research team at Sungkyunkwan University has developed ‘OpenABE,’ an AI gene editor that increases editing efficiency by up to 36-fold. Using AlphaFold-based three-dimensional structural analysis, the team identified target DNA-binding sites and added tailored mutations and tail structures to reduce off-target effects. The editor can precisely modify nuclear and mitochondrial DNA, and is expected to accelerate the development of treatments for genetic diseases by editing only one or two genes with virus-like particles.
