A study of 5,885 people found that the combination of abnormal glucose-lipid metabolism and nocturnal hypoxia increased the risk of sleep fragmentation by up to fivefold. In fact, each 1-unit increase in the TyG index, a marker of glucose-lipid metabolism, was associated with an average of four additional brain arousals per hour. This is related to chronic hypoxia altering glucose-lipid metabolism in brainstem cells and affecting sleep regulation, and the TyG index is expected to be used to identify high-risk groups in the future.
