Researchers at the University of Georgia were the first to apply an epigenetic clock to estimate sharks’ ages based on changes in DNA methylation. Using just 10 DNA markers from blood samples collected from more than 50 aquarium zebra sharks, the researchers confirmed estimates within 2 years of the sharks’ actual ages. The technology is expected to become a tool for determining the age structure of endangered marine species without killing the animals.
