An international research team used generative AI to create Escherichia coli that survives with only 19 amino acids instead of the conventional 20, and the strain showed more than 90% of the fitness of the wild type. The researchers used AI to replace every isoleucine in 52 essential proteins while redesigning them to preserve their function. The strain proliferated stably for more than 450 generations, demonstrating genetic stability and opening the way for the design of new synthetic organisms.
