Hospitalization and mortality risks higher among vulnerable groups, including people with autism and mental illness

The hospitalization rate for cold-related illnesses, including hypothermia, nearly tripled over the past 25 years, rising sharply from 42 to 123 cases per 100,000 hospitalizations, according to findings. The analysis found that patients with autism, substance use disorders or mental illness, as well as those experiencing housing instability, were more likely to be hospitalized for cold-related illnesses. These patient groups were also found to have a substantially higher likelihood of dying during hospitalization than other patients.
