Some antidiarrheal drugs linked to 2.4-fold higher mortality risk

A study of more than 670,000 patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) found that antidepressant use was associated with a 35% increase in all-cause mortality risk. In particular, the antidiarrheal drug loperamide, which is used in patients with diarrhea-predominant IBS, was associated with up to a 2.39-fold higher mortality risk, while antispasmodics showed no significant association. The antidepressant-use group also had higher rates of cardiovascular disease, including a 43% increase in the risk of hypertension.
