The board chairs of nine European drugmakers warned in an open letter that the European pharmaceutical industry is losing competitiveness. They said Europe’s share of global research and development had fallen from 43% in 1990 to 31% today, while its share of commercial clinical trials had halved in 10 years to just 9%.
The chairs of nine companies, including AstraZeneca and Novo Nordisk, called on the European Union to accelerate clinical trials, protect intellectual property and give member states more fiscal flexibility.
