Researchers at the Gladstone Institutes and the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), found that the COVID-19 viral protein ORF8 hijacks macrophages and worsens lung inflammation.
Macrophages exposed to ORF8 produced more ACE2, the entry pathway used by the virus, making them more susceptible to infection.
The researchers reported that an antibody blocking IL-17RA reduced inflammation and lung damage in a mouse model.
