The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a direct final rule stating that nonanimal testing methods may be used instead of animal studies to evaluate drug safety.
The revision replaces the terms animal testing and preclinical terminology with nonclinical testing and nonclinical research, respectively, and adds related definitions to the regulations.
The FDA plans to accept comments from Sept. 22 through Dec. 7 and finalize the effective date within 30 days.
