Researchers at the University of Toulouse in France confirmed that obesity is an independent risk factor for postoperative cognitive decline.
After tracking 106 patients who underwent cardiac or orthopedic surgery, the researchers found that postoperative cognitive decline occurred in 47% of patients with obesity, more than twice the 23% rate in the normal-weight group.
The researchers explained that subcutaneous fat at the surgical site releases excessive inflammatory signals, disrupting the blood-brain barrier and suppressing neuronal plasticity in the hippocampus.
