Researchers determined the structure of collagen fibrils extracted from porcine vitreous at a resolution of 2.6 angstroms (Å). They found that the structure is a molecular assembly in which type II, type V/XI, and type IX collagens and opticin are arranged at a ratio of 8:4:4:4. The team plans to use the findings to develop artificial vitreous and treatments for floaters caused by aging.
