A Japanese collaborative research team has determined that the locations of histone acetylation dictate the phase-separation behavior involved in gene regulation. The researchers demonstrated that the sites where histone H3 is acetylated directly affect its tendency to form condensates with DNA. The team expects this discovery to lead to the development of therapies targeting abnormal gene expression in cancer and neurodegenerative diseases.
