Rice University researchers successfully extended the period of blood glucose control provided by transplanted cells to more than 100 days in a mouse model of type 1 diabetes. By using interleukin-10 (IL-10) protein to locally suppress the immune response, the researchers extended survival to nearly five times that of cells without the protective device. The researchers confirmed safety in a nonhuman primate model and plan to enter clinical trials within several years.
