An IBS research team identified arachnoid clefts, pathways for cerebrospinal fluid drainage, with openings measuring 2-12 μm in diameter. The clefts degenerated with aging, reducing the clearance of brain waste, but intranasal delivery of VEGF-C stimulated lymphatic vessel growth and restored cerebrospinal fluid drainage function in aged mice. The team plans to investigate the role of this pathway in Alzheimer disease and Parkinson disease and to validate the durability of the effect.
