The Rural Development Administration analyzed 83 E. coli genomes and developed a technology that precisely classifies them into 14 types based on genetic fingerprints. The technology showed strain-discrimination ability comparable to that of the existing standard analysis method, multilocus sequence typing (MLST), with scores of 0.726 and 0.723, respectively, while also detecting subtle genetic differences. The length of the genetic fingerprint can also be used to predict pathogenicity and antibiotic resistance, and the technology is expected to be applied to agricultural product safety management after field validation.
