A study found that vitamin B12 deficiency during pregnancy and lactation increases the risk of obesity in offspring. The effect was attributed to a reduction in the gut bacterium Pseudobifidobacterium, whose acetate suppresses obesity through the Ffar2-Ehhadh axis. Supplementing this bacterium or acetate early in life improved obesity, showing that maternal nutrition may have long-term effects on offspring health through the gut microbiome.
