The chairmen of the boards of nine major European drugmakers sent an open letter to European Union (EU) leaders urging them to strengthen the region’s innovation capacity.
They noted that Europe’s share of global pharmaceutical research and development (R&D) had fallen from 43% in 1990 to 31% today.
The drugmakers said closing the clinical trial gap could generate 53 billion euros in economic benefits and create 82,000 jobs.
