U.S.-based CellDex confirmed efficacy in two phase 3 trials of barzolizumab for the treatment of chronic spontaneous urticaria. In the barzolizumab groups, about half of patients had complete resolution of itching and hives after 24 weeks, compared with 15%-18% in the placebo groups.
CellDex reported two cases of anaphylaxis in one treatment group but said the incidence was very low among the more than 2,400 participants overall. The company plans to apply for U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval next year.
