Researchers at the University of Utah identified EFHD1, a protein that causes liver damage in obesity-related metabolic liver disease. EFHD1 excessively promoted mitochondrial fission, triggering an antiviral immune response as if the cells had been attacked by a virus. The researchers reported that blocking EFHD1 reduced inflammation and liver scarring by approximately 30% to 60% in mouse models and human liver organoids.
