A research team led by Won-Seok Jung at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology identified the ERBB4 receptor in excitatory neurons, rather than inflammation, as an early disease-onset switch in Alzheimer disease. In the 5×FAD mouse model, the team found that removing ERBB4 from excitatory neurons reversed abnormal synaptic pruning and cognitive decline. Conversely, overexpressing only ERBB4 in the excitatory neurons of normal mice produced Alzheimer disease-like symptoms without amyloid plaques.
