The U.S. National Eye Institute (NEI) confirmed the effects of a 5:1 combination of lutein and zeaxanthin in a clinical trial involving 4203 participants. Taking 10 mg of lutein and 2 mg of zeaxanthin daily increased macular pigment density and lowered the risk of progression to late-stage age-related macular degeneration by approximately 18% to 26%. Free-form ingredients have 3 to 5 times higher absorption rates than esterified forms, making this a key criterion when selecting products.
