Researchers at the Pennington Biomedical Research Center in the United States confirmed that peroxisomes, organelles within cells, protect insulin. An animal model with impaired peroxisome function showed poorer blood glucose control despite increased insulin secretion. The researchers plan to conduct additional studies to determine whether peroxisome damage is associated with reduced beta-cell function in people with obesity or diabetes.
