Researchers at the Korea Research Institute of Bioscience and Biotechnology (KRIBB) identified a pathway through which Alu element-mediated gene deletion in human brain organoids causes dementia-related neurodegeneration. The deleted SPAST gene became abnormally connected to the neighboring SLC30A6 gene, reducing levels of the zinc transporter ZnT6 by half. The researchers confirmed that lowering intracellular zinc with a zinc chelator restored Golgi apparatus structure and reduced amyloid-beta levels.
