Researchers at the Korea Research Institute of Bioscience and Biotechnology identified the pathway through which a primate-specific gene deletion causes dementia-related neuronal damage. Deletion of the SPAST gene abnormally connected it with a neighboring gene, reducing levels of the zinc transporter protein ZnT6 by half. The researchers said that removing zinc restored the structure of the Golgi apparatus and reduced amyloid-beta accumulation.
