Researchers at the University of Helsinki found that simultaneously blocking mitochondrial respiration and glutamine metabolism causes synthetic lethality in MYC-high breast cancer cells. The University of Helsinki team leveraged the dependence of MYC-high cells on mitochondrial complex I and glutamine breakdown to inhibit tumor growth in a mouse model by combining inhibitors of the two pathways. Based on the finding, the University of Helsinki has launched a project to develop a single drug that simultaneously inhibits both targets.
