An analysis of genetic data from 1 million people found that carriers of specific repeat variants had up to a 24.6% reduction in brain volume before symptom onset. Disease-specific atrophy in certain brain regions was pronounced, including a 22.1% reduction in putamen volume among carriers of the Huntington disease-associated gene HTT. The findings show that brain damage precedes clinical diagnosis, raising hopes for the development of biomarkers for early diagnosis.
