Peptide therapeutics to grow at a 17.8% CAGR, led by GLP-1 Top 10 companies account for 70.5% of sales; patent expirations to reshape competition

The global protein and peptide therapeutics market is projected to grow to $713 billion by 2030. Peptide therapeutics are expected to be the main driver of that growth.
The National Bioeconomy Policy Center projected in an industry trends report published on the 29th that the global protein and peptide therapeutics market will grow at a 9.1% CAGR, from $422.7 billion in 2024 to $713 billion in 2030. The report was adapted from Frost & Sullivan’s “Global Protein and Peptide Therapeutics Growth Opportunities” report.
By product type, protein therapeutics are projected to grow at a 7.3% CAGR, from $364 billion in 2024 to $556.2 billion in 2030. However, their share of the market is expected to decline from 86.1% to 78.0%.
By contrast, peptide therapeutics are expected to grow at a 17.8% CAGR over the same period, from $58.7 billion to $156.7 billion, increasing their market share from 13.9% to 22.0%. The peptide market’s rapid growth is concentrated to a significant extent in the GLP-1 class, which is projected to expand from $55.8 billion in 2024 to $146.4 billion in 2030.
By application, oncology accounted for the largest share of protein therapeutics in 2024, at $121.1 billion, while dermatology was projected to grow the fastest, at a 14.4% CAGR. In peptide therapeutics, gastroenterology is expected to post the highest growth, at a 33.7% CAGR.
North America is expected to remain the largest regional market, at $214.5 billion in 2024, while the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) and Asia-Pacific (APAC) are projected to post strong growth, at CAGRs of 14.0% and 13.0%, respectively.
Market revenue is concentrated among big pharma companies. In 2024, the top 10 companies accounted for 70.5% of total sales, led by Roche (10.6%), Novo Nordisk (9.9%) and Eli Lilly (7.5%).
The report identified multispecific antibodies, generative artificial intelligence (AI)-based design, expanded preventive metabolic disease management with GLP-1s, and next-generation GLP-1 delivery systems as future growth opportunities. Preventive metabolic disease management with GLP-1s and next-generation delivery systems were each assessed as opportunities worth more than $1 billion over the next 5 years.
Meanwhile, patent expirations for major blockbuster protein therapeutics and the entry of biosimilars were identified as factors that will reshape market competition and pricing. Patents on high-priced immuno-oncology drugs such as Keytruda and Opdivo are set to expire after 2027, intensifying competition in oncology and immunology.
