Researchers at Radboud University Medical Center in the Netherlands reported that the proportion of rod cells responsible for vision increased substantially in retinal organoids exposed to light for 6 hours daily. When the researchers exposed the organoids to white light for 6 hours a day from day 70 through day 210 of culture, rod cell–related proteins generally increased. Light exposure did not cause cellular damage or a stress response, preserving cell health while accelerating maturation.
