Researchers at Yale University in the US have identified a new way to increase production of a key protein involved in polycystic kidney disease. By blocking an upstream regulatory sequence (uORF) at the beginning of the gene, the researchers increased polycystin-1 protein levels by approximately 2- to 4-fold. They then prevented kidney cyst formation in mice prone to polycystic kidney disease.
