Bio News

The Land Institute and HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology have assembled the first chromosome-level genomes of two North American prairie perennial crops, Silphium species. The genome of Silphium integrifolium contains 7.6 billion base pairs, while that of Silphium perfoliatum contains 7.5 billion base pairs, making them plants with some of the largest chromosomes. The researchers plan to use DNA fingerprinting to rapidly select for traits such as drought tolerance and seed yield.
