Virginia Tech researchers discovered BMP3, a protein that reverses pulmonary arterial hypertension, a disease with a 50% 5-year survival rate. BMP3 is secreted by pulmonary arterial smooth muscle cells and acts as a “brake” by suppressing excessive proliferation of endothelial cells. The researchers supplemented BMP3 through AAV1 gene therapy, restoring vascular damage in an animal model.
