A research team at Sun Yat-sen University restored the Basso, Beattie and Bresnahan (BBB) score of completely paralyzed rats to 12 by combining spinal cord organoid transplantation with electrical stimulation. The team said this score indicates the ability to support body weight with the hind limbs and walk with stable coordination between the forelimbs and hind limbs. The researchers applied electrical stimulation for 20 minutes daily over 8 weeks, simultaneously inducing structural connections in the organoids and functional recovery of neural networks.
