An “endometrium-on-a-chip” that enables real-time observation of the entire human embryo implantation process has been developed; when hormones were suppressed, only 1 of 8 embryos successfully implanted. The chip replicates the actual endometrial environment using epithelial and stromal cells, reproducing trophectoderm attachment and inner cell mass rearrangement. It is expected to be used in the future to identify the causes of recurrent implantation failure and develop new pregnancy and contraceptive technologies.
