The mechanism by which the tick-borne virus WELV, which has a 40% fatality rate, destroys the liver through the dual action of the GSDME protein has been identified. GSDME induces cell death and prevents the breakdown of fatty acid synthase (FASN), causing fatal fat accumulation in the liver. In animal experiments, an FASN inhibitor improved survival, confirming the potential for developing GSDME-targeted therapies.
