A research team at Huazhong University of Science and Technology found that the Parkinson disease-associated protein PARK7 acts as a delactylase, weakening tumor fibrosis and enhancing anticancer immunity. The protein acts on the lysine 280 (K280) residue of SF3B2, normalizing RNA splicing and reducing secretion of serine protease inhibitors. As a result, extracellular matrix accumulation decreased and tumor growth was inhibited in mouse models. A correlation was also observed in which cancer patients with higher PARK7 expression had longer survival.
