Using a new single-cell metabolomics analysis platform called “SinBactM,” researchers analyzed more than 500 metabolic features in individual bacterial cells and discovered a rare resistance-like state that causes antibiotic resistance. The system combines microextraction and mass spectrometry to identify significant changes in 82 metabolites in Streptococcus pneumoniae resistant to the antibiotic colistin. Future multiomics studies integrating the platform with single-cell transcriptomic analysis and other approaches are expected to contribute to the development of treatments for infectious diseases.
